Alien invaders
Thousands of species have invaded new territories in recent decades, often aided by global trade and man-made habitat change. While many remain harmless, some may cause serious damage. Therefore, we need improvements in surveillance and in our understanding of which factors make a successful invasion possible.
متن کاملTwo invaders achieve higher densities in reserves
1. Invasive species threaten marine biodiversity on a global scale. 2. To test whether marine reserves provide resistance to invading species, the abundance of two conspicuous invaders, a seaweed and an oyster, were measured inside marine reserves and in comparable areas outside reserves in north-western Washington State. 3. Densities of both invaders were significantly higher in marine reserve...
متن کاملRed list species update fears
Next year is International Year of Biodiversity but the latest report last month from the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) marks a grim introduction to the year with growing numbers of species under threat. The Red List of Endangered Species is the world's most comprehensive information source on the global conservation status of plant and animal species with much infor...
متن کاملSpecies distribution modelling of invasive alien species; Pterois miles for current distribution and future suitable habitats
The present study aims to predict the potential geographic distribution and future expansion of invasive alien lionfish (Pterois miles) with ecological niche modelling along the Mediterranean Sea. The primary data consisted of occurrence points of P. miles in the Mediterranean and marine climatic data layers were collected from global databases. All the used models run 100% su...
